Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW, visited St. Stephen's Hospital on 25th January, 2014

Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member visited St. Stephen's Hospital on 25.01.2014. She inspected the Orthopaedic Ward and interacted with the patients and distributed clothes. She went to the Polio Ward which is India's only polio ward headed by Dr. Mathew Varghese, an orthopaedic surgeon. The ward offers reconstructive surgery, which not only gives patients greater mobility, in addition to finding employment. Member found the nursing staff of the hospital very friendly and caring towards the patients. She interacted with the patients in the ward- mostly young girls from all over the country, who had contracted polio in their infancy, but had been totally unaware about the surgery or other assistance available. Lack of funding and access to education were barriers in their leading a normal life. It was only through word of mouth that they came to know of the reconstructive surgery facility being offered by St Stephens Hospital. Many of the parents of the girls expressed that they had apprehensions of their daughter remaining unmarried but now after the surgery there is a new hope that they will be able to walk on their feet and lead a normal life.

The hospital offers corrective surgery for free to those who are unable to afford the charges. It The Stephen's Patient Welfare Society (Member being a donor) underwrites the cost of surgery when necessary, while private donors and organisations such as Rotary International also contribute funds. Since 1987 more than 7,000 children have been treated at St Stephen's, where in addition to surgery, the hospital manufactures calipers and braces in-house, to keep costs low.
