Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW, Chief Guest at Valedictory Function of the Public Meeting on Human Rights at Bangalore

Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW, was Chief Guest at Valedictory Function of the Public Meeting on Human Rights organized by National Alliance of Women (NAWO) on 29.06.2013 at Indian Social Institute, Bangalore. 

The function began with the cultural programmes performed by the students and more than three hundred women participated in the Public Meeting which was the culmination of the training programme on Human Rights: Strengthening Capacities and Capabilities. 

Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, National Commission for Women, addressed the women and spoke on the role of the National Commission for Women (NCW). She said that NCW has been constituted to study and monitor all matters relating to the constitutional and legal safeguards provided for women, to review the existing legislations and suggest amendments, wherever necessary. It also looks into the complaints and takes suo moto notice of the cases involving deprivation of the rights of women in order to provide support, legal or otherwise, to helpless women. The Commission monitors the proper implementation of all the legislations made to protect the rights of women so as to enable them to achieve equality in all spheres of life and equal participation in the development of the nation. The Member said that in the year 2012-13 Commission received over 16,000 cases relating to sexual assault, torture, domestic violence, sexual harassment, kidnapping, abductions, trafficking of women and other crimes against women. 

The member added that NCW is concerned with the incidences of large scale violations in the country, which is due to the low awareness level about of women’s rights among the women. She called upon the participants to spread awareness on women rights among the communities. She also strongly suggested that criminal jurisprudence should be gender oriented. 

Dr. Ruth Manorama, President, National Alliance Of Women(NAWO) said that they had submitted its report to the Verma Commission which was setup to suggest measures including amending laws to bring in strict laws against atrocities on women in the country. 

Smt. Jyothi Raj, from REDS and Member, National Commission for Land Reforms said that the Survival rights, Protection rights, Development rights and Participation rights are included in the laws enacted by the State and Central Government still the women are subject to constant violation of human rights. 
Smt. Geetha Devi, Advocate, Karnataka High Court said that the women should understand the laws and other instruments of protection including the international conventions. 

Shri Mathews Philips, SICHREM, said that Govt of India had constituted specific commissions to protect human rights of citizens. 

Smt. Tharini, Advocate, Tamil Nadu High Court, said that the women play an important role in nation building despite that there is no respect for the women in the families nor in the communities. 

Shri Backianathan, Trainer and Lawyer, Smt. Shataj, Co-ordinator, Women’s Voice, Smt. Sheela and Smt. Shymala, Organising Secretaries, Women’s Voice, Shri. Ankaiah, State Vice President, KKNSS, Shri. Palani Kumar, General Secretary, KSCWCU participated in the event.
