Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member was deeply moved by the real event experiences depicted in the paintings specially those relating to female feticide, dowry and child marriage which are burning issues facing the country.
Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member said that a picture is worth a thousand words; for a visual not only leaves a deep impression, but also provokes one to think deeply. An artist’s efforts to draw attention to the need for change is a significant method of raising the consciousness of a nation. The emergence of art as social protest is particularly notable.
Member said in India the Bengal Renaissance countered western colonial materialistic influences, as well as Muslim influences in Indian culture, by the infusion of spiritual ideas. It was the cultural ideology of nationalism. Tagore was invited by Mahatma Gandhi to the sessions of the Indian National Congress and produced posters for the Congress in 1938.
Dr Charu WaliKhanna stressed that today the independent nation of India is dealing with challenges of castes, class and gender violence, and the work of the artists in addressing social problems, specially those relating to women, in their artistic imagery is highly appreciable.
