Dr. Charu WaliKhanna and Shamina Shafique, Members NCW, attend seminar on “ Violence against Women - Whose concern?”

Dr. Charu WaliKhanna and Shamina Shafique, Members, NCW attended seminar on “Violence against Women Whose concern? on 07.08.2012. The programme was organised All India Women’s Conference (AIWC) on 7th August, 2012 with Financial assistance of National Commission for Women. Ms. Beena Jain, President AIWC welcoming all guests and participants said that the main purpose of this seminar is to find out the causes for the increase in incidents of violence against women in our country. Government and many NGOs are trying their best to address the problem by providing relief services to the victims and also creating awareness towards availability of such services. 

Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW giving the welcome address on behalf of National Commission for Women said that Commission was greatly concerned on the increasing, the incidence of violence against women. She said through this Seminars it is hoped that solutions will emerge to address the problem holistic. 

Ms. Pamela Philipose, Journalist & Chief Guest said that the unequal power relations was the cause of the violence against the women. She spoke extensively on PWDV Act and PC & PNDT Act. Dr. Aparna Basu, Patron, AIWC said that collective efforts needed to be made. In the inter-action session Ms Rami Chabbra, Asha Sharma, Ms Jyoti nand Ms Savita raised valid points to which Member NCW replied. 

Address was also made by Dr. Kiran Walia - Honorable Minister for Welfare and Social Justice. During the rest of the day following deliberations were held :- 

  • Overview of the problem-issues and initiatives by the Government by Ms. Suman Nalwa, Joint Commissioner of Police, Delhi.
  • Role of religion and morality in addressing the problem-some good practices Prof. Geetesh Nirban, Assistant Professor Dept. of Philosophy, Kamala Nehru College, University of Delhi.
  • Role of Media on the aspects of increasing violence against women by Ms. Bhavna Vij Arora, Associate Editor-India Today.

  • Sharing of experiences –Ms. Nita Bhalla, Journalist.
  • Sociological aspects of Violence against women by Prof. Maitrayee Chaudhuri, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences Jawaharlal Nehru University.
  • Psychological perspective of the problem, Interaction by Dr. Shalini John- Psychologist and Dr. Nirupama Prakash Jaypee University.
  • Sharing of experiences and Questions and answers by Information Technology, Solan-Head of the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences and Centre for Women Studies.
  • Summing up of the discussions by Mrs. Usha Nair, Treasurer, AIWC.
  • Vote of thanks by Mrs. Sheela Kakde, Secretary General, AIWC.
