Member, National Commission for Women, Dr Charu WaliKhanna was Chief Guest at Workshop organized by the Human Resource Development Department of the state-owned coal mining Maharatna company, Coal India Limited (CIL) on March 28 2012 at Kolkata. Women participants from CIL including its subsidiaries Western Coalfields Ltd., Eastern Coalfields Ltd. and other attended the one-day programme on Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment. Dr Charu WaliKhanna said women have the right to work in a safe environment and sexual harassment infringes the Fundamental Right of a woman to gender equality. Thus it is essential to provide women a safe gender friendly professional work place and to sensitize employees to these values. She stressed whether or not such conduct constitutes an offence under law or a breach of the service rules, an appropriate complaint mechanism should be created in the employer's organization for redress of the complaint made by the victim. Such complaint mechanism should ensure time bound treatment of complaints.
