National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo moto cognizance and constituted an Inquiry Committee under Sections 8 (1), read with Sections 10 (1) and 10 (4) of the National Commission for Women Act, 1990 to inquire into the media report titled "Tribal woman gang raped in Bengal: Woman's panel orders probe" wherein reportedly a young woman from a tribal community in West Bengal's Birbhum District was gang raped by 12 men as punishment for her relationship with a man from other community.
