The National Commission for Commission convened a two-day interactive meeting with the State Commissions for Women (SCW) that was held from 8th May to 9th May, 2018 at the Commission in New Delhi. On conclusion of the two-day conference of the NCW and State Women Commissions, six resolutions were passed for future course of action.

Smriti Irani visited the Commission on 22nd August, 2012 regarding the incident wherein as reported on 11th August 2012 in a protest agitation by some organisations against the community violence in Assam in Azad maiden Mumbai, women police Officers of the Mumbai police who were on their duty and women in general were allegedly mishandled, harassed and molested.

The programme was organised All India Women’s Conference (AIWC) on 7th August, 2012 with Financial assistance of National Commission for Women. Ms. Beena Jain, President AIWC welcoming all guests and participants said that the main purpose of this seminar is to find out the causes for the increase in incidents of violence against women in our country. Government and many NGOs are trying their best to address the problem by providing relief services to the victims and also creating awareness towards availability of such services.
Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, NCW was Chief Guest at 35th OCG Lectures on “Vigilance Administration/Anti-corruption and Harassment of Women at Working place” on 24 July, 2012 at GSITI, Hyderabad. The programme was organised by Geological Survey of India, Training Institute, Govt. of India, Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India. The topic of the programme was “Harassment of Women at Working place”. Member addressed a gathering of over 240 newly inducted recruits to Geological Survey of India (GSI), to sensitise them on gender issues and appropriate behaviour.

Member NCW, Dr Charu WaliKhanna attended a Seminar on Human Rights and Awareness of Women Rights on 12.2.2012 at Palwal organized by Bhartiya Human Rights Association, at Palwal, Haryana. Delivering the key note address, Member NCW said that violence against women is on the increase and its forms are changing. Instead of using science and technology for investigation and diagnosis of ailments; prevailing are malpractices of sex determination and sex selective elimination. She warned that NCW is monitoring the activities along-with the Ministry of Health and the license will be cancelled of any medical practitioner found indulging in malpractices.

Dr. Girija Vyas, visited Nepal to attend an interaction programme on the theme the "Relevance of Gandhi and Peace in Present Nepal" organised by Mahendra Narayan Nidhi Academy in Kathmandu to mark the 141st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and International Day of Non-Violence.
Archana Sardana, a veteran of the skies and one of India's first woman skydivers visited NCW recently alongwith her parents. She has more than 25 jumps under her belt and wants to perform a daredevil feat by jumping from 29,000 ft. near Mt. Everest and landing at Shyangboche Airstrip at around 12,000 ft.
With recent contradictory rulings on the validity of marriage of minor girls and boys, there has been a lot of confusion as to whether marriage between minors is valid or void. There has also been misguides about section 498A of the Dowry Act. In that context, the National Commission for Women organized a consultation on Laws relating to marriage and Dowry at India Habitat Center, New Delhi on 27th August, 2010.

A seminar on the subject of Agriculture and Gramin Vikas was organised by the Media Association on 3rd June, 2012 at Hapur (UP), wherein, Hon’ble Dr. Amreesh Singh Gautam, Vice President, Delhi State Assembly, was the Chief Guest among various other signatories. Smt. Shamina Shafiq was invited to the function as the Distinguished Guest. During her talk, Smt. Shamina Shafiq emphasised on the role of women in the agriculture field. She emphatically made it clear that while 70 to 75 of rural population was engaged in the field of agriculture but the women has major share i.e. 50 to 60 % which is hidden and never explored. It was the need of the hour that awareness is created about the empowerment of women, only then actual development of agriculture and villages will come forth.

Dr Charu WaliKhanna met women activists of Jharkhand State in an interaction organised in association with Jharkhand State Commission for Women (JSCW) and the Mayor of Ranchi Ms. Rama. In the presence of JSCW member Vasavi Kiro, Dr. Rose Karetta, Prof Maya Prasad, Maya Sinha, Madhu Gupta and others the participants poured out their grievances. The activists, who came from Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh and Ranchi, are fighting against issues like violence against women, forest rights violation, migration, trafficking, displacement, land disputes, alcoholism, social atrocities and female foeticide among others.

Ms. Hemlata Kheria, Member, NCW attended a National Seminar on “Illicit Liquor Trade and Gender Violence” at Chandeshwar, Khurda District, Chilka, Odisha organised by Orissa Yuva Sanskritik Sansad in collaboration with NCW on 26.05.2014.
The programme was organised by Organisation for Diaspora Initiatives (ODI) in collaboration with School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University on 29th March, 2013 at India International Center, New Delhi.
Smt. Lalitha Kumaramangalam, Hon’ble Chairperson, NCW headed the jury at a public Hearing organized on the issues faced by Domestic Workers in our country by National Platform of Domestic Workers on 11th November, 2014 at Indian Social Institute, Lodhi Road.

Member, Ms. Shamina Shafiq, visited Bangluru and had meeting with Karnataka State Commission for Women. Later during the day, she visited Sumangali Sewa Ashram.
Member Shamina Shafiq attended a public hearing in village Newada, Ganeshpur, Leherpur. Hundreds of men and women gathered to raise issues of all kind of atrocities taking place in the area. Member gave a patient hearing to one and all and talked to the concerned police officials and administration to ensure safety to the women.
A "CODE OF CONDUCT" developed by NCW in collaboration with its partners is another step forward in the history of women's movement after Supreme Court guidelines in Vishaka & Others versus State of Rajasthan & Others.
Member Ms. Nirmala Sawant Prabhavalkar attended the ‘North and West Region Consultation on ‘Violations related to women targeted as Witches’ supported by NCW and organized by Partners for Law in Development and Mahila Jan Adhikar Samiti on 29th June, 2012 at Ajmer.
Ms Hemlata Kheria and Ms Shamina Shafiq, Member, NCW visited Jodhpur Jail and had interaction with Shri Rakesh Mohan Sharma, Supt of Jail and his associates. They inspected the jail premises and also examined as to whether the facilities being provided to the female inmates were as per the Jail Manual.
Members Dr.Charu WaliKhanna and Shamina Shafiq visited the shelter home Mamtalaya run by an NGO under the Short Stay Home (SSH) scheme of Central Social Welfare Board and interacted with the girls between the age group of 15 -35 who live together in one premises. The girls had similar stories, in the sense that most of them were victims of domestic violence i.e. abuse by father, did not have a mother and violence against them by their father was mainly due to alcohol or provocation by step mother.
The function was organized as a part of Women’s Day Celebrations by Times Group Book at Select Citywalk Mall, Saket, New Delhi on 6th March, 2012. The book JOURNEY OF THE GODDESS was also released simultaneously by Justice (Retd.) Leila Seth the first woman judge on the Delhi High Court and the first woman to become Chief Justice of a state High Court.
Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW was Chief Guest in State Level Seminar on “Women’s Safety: A Challenge mainly focusing on Domestic Violence against Women” organized by Heal India on 18th December, 2013 at Nalanda, Bihar.
The National Commission for Women on 30.04.12 launched a 24x7 Toll Free Helpline for Women in distress at J.B. Auditorium, AMA, ATIRA, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Number of the helpline is 1800 233 22222 which was launched and the round the clock Toll free help line will be run by NGO – Women Action Group (AWAG).
Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW was Chief Guest at Workshop on "Capacity Building of Judicial & Police Officials on proper implementation of women related laws" organised by Amity Law School, Amity University, NOIDA, Uttar Pradesh on behalf of NCW, New Delhi on 7th February, 2014.
Dr. Charu WaliKhanna Member NCW, attended seminar on “Scheme of Handicrafts- the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hastship Vikas Yojana” at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), Auditorium, New Delhi. The programme was organized by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) Northern Region, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India
An “Elocution Competition” was organised by Delhi Unit of ONGC Officers Mahila Samiti (OOMS) at ONGC Colony, Noida (U.P.), wherein Member was invited as Chief Guest on the last day of the function and to distribute the prizes to the winners. The Members appreciated the efforts of the OOMS and stressed that the topics covered by them i.e. "Nari Ko Devetva Nahin Vyaktitva Chahiye" or "Nari Samaj Ka Darpan Hai" were need of the hour.
Smt. Lalitha Kumaramangalam, Hon'ble Chairperson, NCW participated in National Convention on Single Women Rights at New Delhi on 13th November, 2014 organized by the National Forum for Single Women Rights.
Member Shamina Shafiq visited Thiruvanthapuram (Kerala) and held discussions with the Chairperson and members of the State Women Commission. She looked into the possibility of having an investigation team in the Commission on the lines of Kerala State Commission. This Commission is having the investigation team which is headed by a DIG rank officer and a team consisting of various other police officials (men & women) who assist him in the investigation. Member addressed the “Social Welfare Day” organised by the Social Welfare Ministry, Govt. of Kerala when among others eminent personalities, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala Shri O. Chandy, Hon’ble Social Welfare Minister Dr. M.K. Muneer and four other Ministers and Members of Parliament were also present. Later on Member visited Thiruvanthapuram jail and met women prisoners.
Parliamentary Delegation of Uganda visited the Commission and met Hon'able Chairperson, NCW and discuss the status of "Empowerment of Women" in India.
On December 8, 2011 Dr Charu WaliKhanna, Member NCW visited the State Commission for Women, Jharkhand at Ranchi for State level Interaction and met the Chairperson Smt. Hemlatha Mohan. The JSCW is doing commendable work and besides signing a memorandum with UN Women on Anti Trafficking, a MOU is also on the anvil with CINI (Child in Need Institute) for a Women’s Protection Cell, the first of its kind. The State Commission has also tied up with Ranchi University in which students as a part of their project will track trafficking and simultaneously create awareness on the problem. The new team comprising Chairperson Smt. Hemlatha Mohan, and Members Smt Vasavi Kiro and Anuradha Choudhury has disposed almost 500 cases after September 7, 2010 as against 550 cases disposed in the past 3 years
Women Municipal Councillors from Karnataka visited National Commission for Women on 31.1.2012. The visit was organised by Urban Research Centre Bangalore as a part of capacity building programme towards strengthening local democracy and citizen participation in urban areas.
Smt. Lalitha Kumaramangalam, Hon’ble Chairperson, NCW inaugurated two days National Seminar on Gender and Violence: A challenge for Equitable Society, organised by Department of Sociology, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and Research Committee 10 (gender studies) of Indian Sociological Studies (ISS) on 15th October, 2014.
Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member was Chief Guest in the National Consultation to review Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls – SABLA, implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development Government of India organized by NCW in Collaboration with Child in Need Institute [CINI] at Kolkata on 25th February, 2014.
A team of consisting Ms. Hemlata Kheria and Ms. Shamina Shafiq Members, NCW visited Jaisalmer border areas in order to overview the women situation in the belt attached to BSF camps. During this process, the team accompanied by BSF officials met sarpanch of village Mithauda, situated in border area, adjoining BSF camps, when local villagers, including a sizeable number of women were also present. During the interaction some startling facts came to the notice of the team. This village is a cluster of about 40 shanties. There is rampant Illiteracy. No medical facility either private or public is available. They have to go nearby town/city in case of emergency which is cumbersome. Their houses are name sake. Their 40 huts are scattered in a group of two or more far away from each other. In their local dialect, they call these huts ‘Dhaura’. Their major source of livelihood is animal husbandry. They sell their produce of milk to the cooperatives. Agriculture produce is hardly sufficient to meet their both ends.
A programme was organized at Bank of India, Management Development Institute, CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai on 23rd January, 2012 in collaboration with National Commission for Women. The 76 participants included women employees from all branches of Bank of India. The ‘Code of Conduct’ Poster for Zero Tolerance of Sexual Harassment at Workplace was released on the occasion alongwith the booklet.

Mrs. Mamta Sharma, Chairperson NCW accompanied by Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW attended a Jan Sunwai Programme organized by the NGO Hamari Priyadarshini Ek Vichar, at Swaraj Garden, Ravindra Bhawan, Professor Colony, Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal. Referring to rising instances of crime, the NCW Chairperson said that Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are the two states in the country where maximum atrocities are committed against women. The state governments’ neglect on this issue is highly unfortunate, she said. During the programme, the Commission received numerous complaints relating to rape, domestic violence, sexual harassment at work place, police apathy etc. Out of the 125 complaints received by the NGO, 90 complaints were considered by the Commission. Most of the complainants were given a personal hearing by Chairperson and Member, NCW and assurance of action to be taken. Accordingly the DGP of Madhya Pradesh State has also been briefed.
Smt Mamta Sharma, Chairperson NCW visited Puducherry to attend a two days national seminar on the topic “Empowerment of the Women in the Era of Globalization – Opportunities and Challenges” on 15-16 Dec, 2012, she also visited the central prison.
Parliamentary Delegation of Uganda visited the Commission and met Hon'able Chairperson, NCW and discuss the status of "Empowerment of Women" in India.
The programme was organized by Citizens Rights Trust at St Ann’s Auditorium ICSC on 23.07.2012 . The participants included staff and educationists from St. Ann’s B.Ed College, St. Ann’s M.Ed College, St. Ann’s school ICSC, St.Ann’s school SSC and other eminent women.
On 8th December 2011, Member NCW Dr Charu WaliKhanna took part in the Inaugural Session of ‘Jharkhand State Level Consultation on the Implementation of PCPNDT Act’ at Ranchi and gave her invaluable insights during the discussions.
