State Level Interaction with NGOs at Ranchi, Jharkhand (07th Dec, 2011)

Dr Charu WaliKhanna met women activists of Jharkhand State in an interaction organised in association with Jharkhand State Commission for Women (JSCW) and the Mayor of Ranchi Ms. Rama. 

In the presence of JSCW member Vasavi Kiro, Dr. Rose Karetta, Prof Maya Prasad, Maya Sinha, Madhu Gupta and others the participants poured out their grievances. The activists, who came from Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh and Ranchi, are fighting against issues like violence against women, forest rights violation, migration, trafficking, displacement, land disputes, alcoholism, social atrocities and female foeticide among others. 

Member NCW expressed the opinion that the conflict between industry and agriculture would always remain but the women have to fight for their rights. She stresses the role of women and said that infect, women’s participation is important and they should learn to use the rehabilitation money judiciously. Dr Charu WaliKhanna highlighted the need for a Women’s Policy and said the women should join together and take up issues irrespective of whether it’s a matter related to tribal or non-tribal, 

A Lohardaga-based activist, Manorama Ekka, complained that the villagers were kept in the dark when a sponge iron factory was set up in the area. She submitted a petition to the Commission for police protection. 

Kiran Jha, a city-based social activist who took up the cause of domestic maid Anna Oraon after she died under mysterious circumstances at Morabadi in March this year, rued that no one came forward to help her, and submitted petition to the Commission for help and protection. 

Another domestic maid-turned-activist Kiran Ekka said she was fighting for food and social security, especially for those women who are single and divorced.
