Ms Hemlata Kheria, Member, NCW visited Chittorgarh jail in Rajasthan on 10th May, 2013

Ms. Hemlata Kheria, Member visited Chittorgarh Jail in Rajasthan where she inaugurated the female ward, which was renovated by the Government of Rajasthan on the recommendation of the Member.

In her inaugural address, she felicitated the Govt. of Rajasthan and said that it was a matter of great pleasure for her and the NCW that the concerned authorities have implemented the recommendations made by her during her previous visit to Chittorgarh Jail. In her last visit she observed that the female ward in the jail required a complete overhaul and make-over as certain basic facilities to be provided to the inmates were either missing or not in conformity with the provisions of the Jail Manual. Therefore, she had strongly recommended that renovation work of female ward should be done on priority so that female inmates are not inconvenienced further. She said that now she was contented to see a gleam of satisfaction on the faces of female inmates present there. She specially patted Shri Ashok Upadhyaya, Deputy Jail Superintendent who had taken keen interest in upgrading the female ward. It was only his initiative and concern for the female inmates, that the female ward was renovated so soon. She had a round of the Jail when she had an interaction with both male and female inmates. She especially counselled the male inmates and expected that the anti-women activities earlier committed by them will not be repeated after their release from the jail on expiry of their term of imprisonment. He reminded them that the Jail in fact is a Sudhar Grih which brings the stranded people on right path in order to transform them and revert back to the mainstream. She said that it was one of the endeavours of NCW to inspect the jails and see that the basic facilities to the jail inmates are within their reach.

In the end, she once again – thanked the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, Chittorgarh Jail inmates and others present on the occasion, including media and requested the Jail authorities to extend a helping hand to the inmates so that they prove themselves as responsible – citizens after their release from the Jail.
