Ms Hemlata Kheria, Member, NCW Chaired in the Launch of South Asia Campaign on Right to Sanitation in India at New Delhi on 19th March, 2013

Ms Hem Lata Kheria, Member Chaired in the Launch of South Asia Campaign on Right to Sanitation in India held at Rajendra Bhawan, Deen Dayal Upadhayay Marg, New Delhi. Hundreds of people from different under-served areas of Delhi gathered and shared their experiences on the situation of sanitation in their localities. The Campaign was supported by various organisations such as All India Kabadi Majdoor Mahasangh, Action India, IGSSS, National Conferation of Dalit Organisations, etc. 

While representing the NCW, Ms Kheria said that India is the global capital in terms of people going for open defecation. She expressed her views on the subject in detail to spread awareness and cultural change, abolish manual scavenging, and Right to Sanitation as a fundamental constitutional right for all citizens. She vehemently favoured the Citizens ’Çharter on Right to Sanitation as this is one of the most important development challenges in South Asia. In spite of considerable development, the count of people not having access to sanitation comes to billion using open defection which spread Diarrhoea and many other diseases in children. She recommended that they are provided access to improved sanitation.
