Her Excellency, Governor of Gujarat Dr.Shrimati Kamalaji and Ms.Mamta Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women launch 24x7 Toll Free Helpline (1800 233 22222)

The National Commission for Women on 30.04.12 launched a 24x7 Toll Free Helpline for Women in distress at J.B. Auditorium, AMA, ATIRA, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Number of the helpline is 1800 233 22222 which was launched and the round the clock Toll free help line will be run by NGO – Women Action Group (AWAG). 

The helpline was launched by Her Excellency, Governor of Gujarat Dr. Shrimati Kamalaji. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kamla said that this helpline will play a vital role in guiding women on how to access the right place for a solution of their grievances. She also stressed on the need for educating women, saying that in a democratic country like India education plays an important role in solving problems of people. Dr.Kamla stressed on the need for education among women irrespective of their caste or religion. She also stated that employment is important alongwith education. 

Ms.Mamta Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women was the Chief Guest on the occasion. She said that the helpline is being launched on a pilot basis first in Gujarat and Haryana and then the model may be replicated across India. Chairperson, Ms.Mamta Sharma informed the audience that to create awareness among women about their rights NCW is launching project MahilaAdhikarAbhiyan in the four States of Kerala, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Punjab with the view to create awareness among rural women on their legal rights. In the morning, the Chairperson held a press conference at Circuit House, ShahiBagh in which she requested the press to spread the information about the toll free help line so that women in distress could benefit. 

Ms.CharuWaliKhanna, Member, NCW stressed the need to assist women in distress and helping them lead a violence free life. Smt. LeelabenAnokoliya, Chairperson, Gujarat State Commission for Women also spoken on this occasion. 

Welcome address was given by Dr.IllaPathak, Founder Secretary, AWAG. After vote of thanks by Ms.SarabenBaldiwalathe programme concluded with the National Anthem.
