Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, NCW was Chief Guest at 35th OCG Lectures on “Vigilance Administration/Anti-corruption and Harassment of Women at Working place” on 24 July, 2012 at GSITI, Hyderabad. Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, NCW was Chief Guest at 35th OCG Lectures on “Vigilance Administration/Anti-corruption and Harassment of Women at Working place” on 24 July, 2012 at GSITI, Hyderabad. The programme was organised by Geological Survey of India, Training Institute, Govt. of India, Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India.

The topic of the programme on 24th July, 2012 was “Harassment of Women at Working place”. Member addressed a gathering of over 240 newly inducted recruits to Geological Survey of India (GSI), to sensitise them on gender issues and appropriate behaviour.

Geological Survey of India commenced its journey in 1851 and today is the nation's premier and one of the oldest and largest geosciences organizations of the world. Being an all India organization it has six Regional offices, three Operational Wings and one Training Institute, besides Central Headquarters. It has a staff of over 3000 personnel posted in different parts of the country, out of which 40% comprised women. The newly inducted recruits on Post Graduates or Post Graduates will be posted to different regions of the country, on completion of their training.

Dr. Charu WaliKhanna expressed pleasure in seeing so much energy among the young trainees. She released the ZERO TOLERANCE POSTER and the guide line books developed by NCW in the presence of Sri S.C. Rath, Dy. DG, GSITI, Hyderabad; Dr. A.S. Senthi Vadivel, R.A.O. & Vigilance Officer, GSITI.

After making a presentation she interacted with the trainees and said she hoped that they understood the importance of appropriate form of behaviour at the workplace. She said that both men and women, must stay constantly attuned to the gender differences and be gender sensitive in order to work in harmony and succeed in life. She stressed on the fact that possibly most of the trainees were interacting between the opposite sex for the first time; and whenever women and men interact, gender-based group differences can come into play, at times creating avoidable misunderstandings. These are the communication-, style-, expectation-, and experience-based misunderstandings that arise among women and men interacting for the first time. It is important for men to be especially aware of the potential for misunderstandings in the work environment, both in their own actions and reactions as well as those of their colleagues, that is why they need to understand what is appropriate behavior.

Sometimes on being harassed or facing to sexually inappropriate behaviour young girls find it difficult to cope with the intensity of their emotion and keep it bottled up. Member NCW specifically stated that they must break their silence and bring it to the notice of the Internal Complaints Committee, specially constituted to deal with cases of Sexual harassment at the Workplace. She also told that all employees must be sensitive to women and also try to be non-judgemental of the victim.
