Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, National Commission for Women, Delhi, went to Goa and paid courtesy call to Hon’ble Governor of Goa, Shri Bharat Vir Wanchoo, Hon’ble Governor of Goa, on 03.06.2013 and discussed gender issues.

The Hon’ble governor appreciated the role of NCW in safeguarding the rights of women and monitoring implementation of laws made to protect the rights of women so as to enable them to achieve equality in all spheres of life and equal participation in the development of the nation.

He said that Goa is a popular tourist destination especially for women who feel safe to holiday even alone. He added the police staff which have been drawn from the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) have been sensitized and trained to deal with the safety and security requirements of women travellers visiting the state.

He added that the state has a number of schemes for women including its flagship scheme of ‘Grih Adhar'. To name a few for example are Yashaswini Scheme, Shelter Home for Women (SHW), “Laadli Laxmi” Scheme, Grant-in-Aid Scheme to provide Financial Assistance to the Mahila Mandals, Rehabilitation Scheme for Commercial Exploited Women among others.
