Dr Charu Wali Khanna presented the Report of the Expert Committee on Gender and Education to the Honourable Minister for HRD Sri M M Pallam Raju in his office in Shastri Bhawan. She was accompanied by NCW SRO Ms Richa Ojha and Members of the Expert Committee Ms Neelam Nath (retd. I.A.S.), Ms Yogita Bhayana, Mr Piyush Angrish. 

Initiating the presentation Dr Charu WaliKhanna explained how the NCW was set up in 1992 in pursuance of Article 15[3] of the Constitution to, inter alia , review the constitutional and legal safeguards for women, facilitate redressal of their grievances advise government on policy matters relating to women , etc . She also elaborated upon the powers of the Commission while investigating any matter. In response to HRM s query on whether the Commission has been able to bring about any constitutional changes, Member NCW clarified that it has been able to make several recommendations in regard to its mandate ; and in accordance with it, in the background of the rising trends of crimes against women , it set up in June 2012 an Expert Committee on Gender and Education to examine the various issues involved; and make suitable recommendations to primarily integrate gender sensitization / human rights education at all educational levels in order to sensitize people to them as well as to make recommendations for policy level changes as also for better implementation of existing policies and programmes for welfare of women and children in the field of education . 

Endorsing the idea HRM suggested that NCW should have regular interactions with NCERT , NIOS for a dynamic exchange and integration of ideas and implementable points of action in the sphere of women s rights and gender sensitization . 

Member NCW finally summarized the Report’s Recommendations :- compliance of the National Education Policy’s ingredients on gender sensitivity / formation of a Task Force to suggest suitable changes in syllabii / making female students aware of their legal rights at all levels appropriately / teachers orientations to be suitably moulded, and above all to involve Panchayati Raj Institutions in the entire endeavour.
