Dr. Charu WaliKhanna Member, NCW Chief Guest at National Workshop on Ratification of ILO Convention C189 for Decent Work for Domestic Workers organised by National Alliance of Women (NAWO) at New Delhi

Dr.Charu WaliKhanna Member, NCW was Chief Guest at National Workshop on Ratification of ILO Convention C189 for Decent Work for Domestic Workers. The two day National Workshop was organised by National Alliance of Women (NAWO) at New Delhi in association with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) and National Centre for Labour (NCL) at New Delhi on 30-09-2012 and 01-10-2012.

In the National Workshop discussed were the topics of Securing decent work for domestic workers in India; Domestic Workers Welfare Policies and Programmes; ILO Domestic Workers Convention C189; Enactment of Comprehensive Legislation of Domestic Workers; Developing strategies for organising and Networking of Domestic Workers; and Developing strategies for campaign and lobbying for ratification of C189 in India.

Dr. Charu WaliKhanna spoke on role of NCW and its sensitivity to the problem of the need to recognise domestic work as dignified work. She said that The Convention on Domestic Workers is a convention setting labour standards for domestic workers; and there is a need to take protective measures against violence and enforcement of the minimum age, especially for girls. She spoke on the need to regulate employment agencies who appeared to be fly by night operators and disappeared on the slightest problem.

The participants included organsations from the 14 states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Chattisgarh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Goa. Distinguished speakers included Dr. Ruth Manorama, President, NAWO, Dr. Pravin Sinha, Senior Advisor, (Labour & IR), FES, Ms Nupur Sanyal, Hony, Gen. Secretary, Institute of Social Work, Kolkatta, Mrs. Sashi Sail, NAWO, Chhattisgarh, Ms Shataj, KGKS, Bangalore, Mr. Jeevanand, National Centre for Labour.
