The objective of the programme was to sensitise and make students aware of gender issues, especially in the light of the horrific incident that took place in Delhi on 16 December.

The program was divided into 3 sections, which began by showing a small 5 minute film on the Delhi gang rape case. The Principal, Dr. M.N. Sitaraman delivered the welcome address. After which Dr. Charu WaliKhanna spoke to over 500 students and exhorted both boys and girls to take steps for the security of women who constitute half the sky. She also informed the students of the role of the National Commission for Women. In a passionate and hard-hitting address, she succeeded in getting students to speak up about harassment that they faced at different places. The representative from the local police station also addressed the students, who questioned him passionately on the role of the police in failing to control crimes, and especially those of crimes against women.

Following this, Dr. Madhumita Chakraborty, Coordinator of the program did a small exercise with about 30 student volunteers (15 boys and15 girls) to depict how gender roles are internalised in our lives from the time when we are children, wherein we associate certain roles only with a particular gender. The program came to an end with the telecasting of the BBC documentary on female foeticide in India titled “India’s missing girls” and a vote of thanks by Aamir Khan, President of the College Students Union.
