Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW, attended the programme on the ‘Problems of the Girl Child and its Solution’ on 19.06.2012. The programme was organised by Delhi Women’s Association, All India Women’s Conference, South Delhi Branch at Shankar Vidya Kendra. Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. 

The programme commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, Member, NCW, and Ms. Janki Rajaram, President, Dr. Mrs. Tripti Srivastava, Secretary, Ms. Mythily Jagannathan, Treasurer and Ms. Shashi Guha, Vice President. 

The discussion was initiated by Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, as Chief Guest. She told the young girls present that the youth is the future of the nations and looked upon as future leaders. Teenagers should form opinions on how policy should shape the society of tomorrow and raise their voice against injustice and violence against women. She also said that young people in our society should raise and discuss national issues and take a leading role to finding solutions. Dr. Charu WaliKhanna, said that this is a vulnerable age and young girls need to have a better understanding of the biological and evolutionary development factors of teenagers in order to prevent or better inappropriate behaviour. 

The participants included over 100 young girls who were counselled on problems of abuse at home by relatives or parents, how to make a police complaint. The young girls were also guided on issues of Love Marriage, Relations with parents, Safety of girls when they go out alone or at night, verification of boys with whom they go out with. Also dealt with were the topics of female foeticide, domestic violence etc. 

The girls raised pertinent questions regarding violence against women, specially molestation and rape cases. Member guided them that in case they are faced with the unfortunate situation what steps should be taken and she also told them to take the basic precautions in order to avoid such incidents from occurring. She also expressed her appreciation of the fact that the organisation had conducted self defense classes from which the girls had benefited.
