Dr Charu WaliKhanna and Ms Hemlatha Kheria visited the village Garhi Sampla in Rothak District Haryana on 27.8.2012 at an interaction organised by NGO HRAWS and local partner

Welcoming the members Director Shri Satyapal Khokhar said often problems of women can be solved by keen interest shown by the National Commission for Women and its intervention. The village women told the Members NCW of their grievances. The most pressing problem was of health and according to the women doctors at health centres are not properly examining them nor giving free medicine, which they have to purchase from the private chemists. Despite the State making available the facility of ambulance services for pregnant women, the women said that the ambulance make excuses to enter the village and ask the pregnant woman to come to the main road. The women complained of illicit liquor shops and problem of alcoholism among men.

The NCW team enquired about their views regarding the right to choose the partner. The older generation of women said inter caste marriage is acceptable but not within the same village. If the girl gets married to a person from the same village then she will have to be ostracised. At the same time they resisted inter caste marriages with dalits despite the fact that the boy may be educated and earning well. In such circumstances they displayed a tendency to aggression and violence against the girl.

What was heartening ws the fact that the younger generation of parents were more malleable to accepting cjhange and the young unmarried girls said if a doctor marries a doctor how does caste matter. because they didn’t understand the honour and customs of the respective families. The discussion was coordinated by Sarpanch's mother-in-law and Lalitha, Secretary Sahayog.

All the women displayed a great sense of patriotism and sang folk songs, they were proud to belong to the village and in turn State of Haryana.
