Ms. Lalitha Kumaramangalam took over as the
Chairperson of the National Commission for Women w.e.f. 29th September, 2014.
Belonging to an illustrious political family, comprising Governor, Cabinet
Ministers, Army General and Members of Parliament, Ms. Kumaramangalam is a
prominent political leader in her own right, who has been working relentlessly
for decades for the empowerment and advancement of women belonging to the
vulnerable and under-privileged sections of society. She has worked on issues
dealing with healthcare, HIV/AIDS prevention and worked with dis- empowered
communities like truckers, sex-workers, the LGBT community, migrant and
construction workers, SHGs and urban slum women.
Mrs. Rekha Sharma is an alumina of
prestigious DAV College, Dehradun (Uttarakhand). A graduate in Political
Science, History and English Literature with a Diploma in Marketing and
Advertising, Fashion Designing and Higher Diploma in Computers System
Married to an Army Officer, she has
proactively taken part in various family welfare activities within the Army to
promote better standards of living and education to
the wives and children of the
soldiers in order to make them self reliant and bold to brave the day to
day rigors and challenges of the Army life.
She has been an erstwhile Member of District Consumer & Redressal Forum
with the Govt. of Haryana.
Running her own event management center by the name of 'Chavi'
she has organized various engrossing seminars and debates, talk shows and
seminars on meaningful social relevant events affecting women at large.
She has to her credit of establishing a registered NGO called
'Haryana Mahila Uthan Samiti' which works for the empowerment of rural women of
Haryana. She has been a Social Media activist since the proliferation of
internet environment in the country.
Ms. Sushma Sahu
A former President of Mahila Morcha, Bihar
and Ward Councillor in Patna Municipal Corporation, Ms. Sushma Sahu joined the
National Commission for Women as a member w.e.f. August 17, 20015. From a young
age, she was encouraged by her family to take interest in women-related issues
and fight against injustice meted out to them. She completed her Masters in
Home Science along with B.Ed. and M.Ed. from Patna University. She had served
as a Lecturer in Magadh University. Committed to the cause of social justice
and women empowerment, she has held many important posts in political and
social organizations. Her experience as an administrator and a social activist
will help her to work effectively in the National Commission for Women.
Mr. Alok Rawat
An IAS officer of 1977 batch of Sikkim cadre,
Shri Alok Rawat joined as a Member of the National Commission for Women with
effect from 20th October, 2015, afternoon. A scholar extraordinary, with
highest academic degrees from India and abroad, Shri Rawat brings with him a
rich reservoir of administrative experience with a variety of postings in his
State cadre as well as in the Centre. He was secretary in the Government of
India for more than four years, having worked in the Cabinet Secretariat,
Administrative Reforms, Public Grievances and Pensions as well as Secretary in
the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and
Union Public Service Commission. In his state cadre, he worked in the field of
Planning and Development, Education, Rural Development, Finance, etc. Shri
Rawat was instrumental in ushering innovative changes and improvements in
whichever organisation or department he had worked, including introduction of
CNG in public transport buses in Delhi, negotiation for bus services between
India and Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, Nepal etc. He has been involved with
the usage of 'Adhaar' numbers in pension matters and in the launching of
'Pragati' initiative by the Prime Minister for speedy and effective redressal
of public grievances. He also represented the country at the global water fora
in Sweden and was involved in streamlining issues relating to Indus Water
Treaty with Pakistan.
